 need help choosing new first gear for glide

not sure where to start. i had 4.88 rear gear in car and 1.76 first gear in glide. car usualy spun tires on the starting line if track was loose and it ran out of motor at 5/8s track. now have 4.56 finals and same 1st. gear you can pretty much guess what i was strugling with last week end. thats right, tire spin and poor 60 foot time. how low would you go and why? i'm thinking 1.89 . don't forgit it's a cadillac that means its rods are a hell of alot longer then anyone's so it don't spin faster then 5grand.

i don't need to be the fastest just faster then you!

Damn PW sounds like we have simiar problems my friends give me a hard time and just enough info to confuse me

Pee-Wee Just change everything, then You dont have to guess at what fixed the Problem. Thats the way we do it here in algeria. Hope this helps...

peewee-ithink it's hard to notice a small change taking place over 8 years. ever notice your hair being longer than it was yesterday? your converter may not stall any higher than when it was new but can eat horsepower like the swag boys at a bbq. but like they say- 1 change at a time, and look at it over more than 1 or 2 passes. i bet you'll figure it out pretty quick.snake

PW YOU HAVE CHANGED YOUR GEARS FROM 488 TO 456 THATS ABOUT 7%, AT 5000RPM THAT WOULD BE ONLY 350RPM. IF YOU ARE JUST WATCHING THE TACH IT IS HARD TO SEE 350RPM. YOU MAY BE CORRECT ABOUT THE GEARS. BUT WE HAVE RUN 4.56 GEARS IN OUR CAR. UNTILL WE WENT TO A BLOWER TO RUN IN T/E CLASS AND RUN WITH THE TA BOYS, WE NEVER SPUN THE TIRES TOO FAST. WE HAVE RUN AS FAST AS 3.27 WITH THAT COMBO. Mike and I are tag teaming you. Later in the day did the track come around or did you car run better? What do you have for a converter know? In our BBC the highest we run is a 3500/lowest is 2350.

kenny good explanation. i'll have it checked after the next race but i'm pretty sure the tires are spining. other racers have said so and the car was going sideways off the starting line and my 60ft. times improved from 1.74 to 1.60 as the track got better and my e-ts went from a 49 to a 27. so what do you think now ? i'm still gona have the converter checked though. pw

LETS SEE IF I CAN DO THIS. CONVERTORS ARE A BLACK ART!!!! PERFORMANCE CONVERTORS ARE RATED BY STALL SPEEDS ONLY, NOT EFFICIENCY. TO CHECK THE STALL IS EASY. PUT CAR IN HIGH GEAR AND WATCH THE TACH. WHEN THE BRAKES WONT HOLD IT ANYMORE THAT IS ABOUT THE STALL. BUT YOU CAN FLASH IT PAST THE STALL WHEN YOU ARE ON THE TRANS BRAKE. IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH MOTOR! BUT WHAT NO ONE WILL TELL YOU IS HOW MUCH SLIP YOU GET. SO SOMETIMES YOU THINK YOUR SPINNING THE TIRES, BUT YOU MAY BE SLIPPING IN THE CONVERTOR. THE HIGHER THE GEAR RATIO THE MORE SLIP YOU MAY GET. OK NOW THATS MY SHORT STORY ON CONVERTORS!

mike thanks again for all your input. the stock cadi rod is 6.750 but is not forged. i use the olds rod which is 6.735 but have it bushed .015 long for floating pin this rod is forged all this on a nine inch stroke (ooops thats the wrong rod) i mean 4.304 inch stroke. the cadi experts say don't spin this combo faster than 5500. pw
