I just completed tech in Yuma and nothing was said about my 4 point harness? I understand we have to have 5 point now... We have to get new helmets, I have less then 75 pass and my last new one. Tail lights on our cars also? Soon with all the NHRA stuff we might just get slicks and go asphalt in the off time...

| I may still have a good chute with a new pilot. I'll look for you when I get home this afternoon. I went to the spring style launcher. |

Tech officials do make mistakes. This does not mean it is their fault for racers not knowing the rules. 5 point harnesses have been in the rules for a year. It is up to the racer to know the rules for their class. Most people compain about safety items that we must have...until you need it.

Most helmets manufactured within the last ten years are D.O.T. or Snell approved.

Jody,
Can you clarify for me the rule about trans blankets? Is it for rear engine cars as well or just the cars that the trans sits between their feet.
I respect everything the NSDA is doing for the sport, and want everyone to be safe, but nobody has still answered my question of why this was not addressed in the off season. From what I understand the NHRA just made some changes to the funny car class, and it was done after the last race of the season when there was plenty of time to get it done. Unless there was an insurance issue after the issue in Yuma???? I don't know.... |

The biggest reason for the implementaion of these rules is, we continue to have people racing without the proper safety equipment. This became very evident in Yuma. We were continually asking racers to wear the proper equipment. Countless racers came to race without the correct gear. We cannot continue letting racers go down the track without this equipment any longer. Bad timing? Maybe. Fact is, We do not want to see anyone get hurt! We needed to mandate things as soon as we could to eliminate these issues. We do feel the racers pain in getting these things done, But it must happen for everyones safety.
As far as trans. shield, it is for all planetary type transmissions( pwerglide, turbo 350, 400. etc.). Dragsters are required as well. Lenco type transmissions are not required to have a blanket. The case on those are aftermarket and are built with explosions in mind. Racers can use a blanket, a shield or a transmission case that is sfi rated. There are tons of them on websites for sale that are outdated (NHRA requires replacement or re-certify at 5 year intervals on shields and cases...2 years on blankets).
According to NHRA`s website under rules, They have had 72 updates to the rules since the rulebook was released for 2008. This list will continue to grow throught the year. Food for thought...

Jody,
Thank you for the clarification. Blanket is no longer an issue- thanks Chris. I am not just speaking for myself though. There is other cars on my team that are going to need substansial upgrades to their cars that will require time and money to get done. (And yes quite a bit more than $200 gary)
We understand the need for these rules, and support them but the timing is way off.... But we will deal with that- when we get the cars updated we will be back out racing again. See ya in a couple of days.... |

| Well to be honest with you onemoretime7n the rules were in the rulebook last year and when the rules came out last year, you had the whole season to add little bits here and there, and also we stopped racing in november, that gave all of november and december, and a couple of weeks in january. |

| Hold on a second there young one- most of these items that are now REQUIRED were only RECOMMENDED in last years rule book. There is a diffrence between required and recommended. |

| yea i know that, well if they were recommended and they were part of your safety wouldn't you try and put them on your car throughout the year? Jody races on the asphalt and so do many other racers, so if they recommened something to me, i would most likely try my best to have to put on my car, even if it was a little bit at a time. |

I appreciate the kind offer Gary but Chris has an old trans blanket that he is not using anymore that he has offered me. As for the other stuff- that is the minor things that I am not to worried about getting. Also it is not just my car that needs updated- there are other cars on my team that will need substansial upgrades. As I have said before I don't just speak for myself- we have a 4 car team that all have some updating.... If anybody on my team needs this stuff I will see you at the Torco trailer.
Thanks though..... |

???? THIS WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO STUDY.... BUT I HAVE 3 RULES THAT JUST JUMP OUT AT ME!
TAIL LIGHTS? WE DONT NEED ALL THE 1/4 MILER RULES. THEY RUN 1/2 TO 3/4 MILE AWAY FROM THE STARTER. WE GO 600 TO 1300 FEET. IF ITS TOO DARK TO SEE OUR CARS WITHOUT A TAIL LIGHT THEN ITS TOO DARK IN THE SHUTDOWN! NOW DONT GET ME WRONG THIS IS A LOW DOLLAR FIX BUT WHY?
100 MPH CHUTE RULE....WHY...OK IN TF,TA,TE, BUT WHY IN THE OTHER CLASSES AT 100 MPH!(GARY $30-50 FOR A CHUTE? I MUST BE GOING TO THE WRONG SWAG MEETS) I KNOW THAT I DONT WANT TO TAKE A HAND OFF THE WHEEL IN MY JEEP AT 100MPH TO PULL THE CHUTE.
HELMETS...SNELL 90 OR SNELL 00??? KENNY AND I TALKED ALONG TIME AGO WHEN HE BOUGHT HIS NEW HELMET (SNELL 90) THIS WAS AN INVESTMENT TOO US $450.00 FOR A HELMET IS ALOT FOR OUR TEAM. BUT WE BOTH SAID IT WOULD NEVER NEED TO BE REPLACED! NOW IF KT WANTS TO DRIVE THE TE CAR HE WILL NEED TO BUY A NEW SNELL OO OR 05 HELMET! (WHAT THE HECK CAN GO WRONG WIH A HELMET THAT SPENDS MOST OF ITS LIFE IN A BAG?)

Taillights, The starter needs to see the vehicle easily. If he can`t see you turn off the track, he doesn`t send other cars down. It makes it very easy to see with a taillight.
Chutes, It takes quite a bit of power to go 100 in the sand. We are not mandating that the drivers pull the chute, but it needs to be operable. At 100mph things go by fast. Throttle sticks, car gets out of shape, lose brakes, all of wich a chute would be beneficial.
Helmets, as long as they are snell rated would be fine. Now, if it has been in an accident and shows visual signs of impact, thats a different story. A visual inspection will be done on helmets, jackets, belts, things that can wear. We are not too concerned about the date, but more about the condition.

what about our weekend racers who dune or want to try racing. are they going to have to meet all these nhra rules. install battery kills, replace all of their rubber fuel lines. this has been a safe ,fun, family sport decades. alot of people quite nhra racing because of over board rules.
