Ok I know it is a strange request but I am in the midst of reviving a program I started many years ago.
There are only a handful of training programs for safety workers specfically aimed at racing venues. 3 of the 5 are on the East coast and none have to do with dirt sports. They are typically pavement related programs. I am going to work with a few other folks in the industry to provide some classes for people out here in the west to educate them on the different vehicles and things I have had the pleasure dealing with over the last 15 years.
So here is my question to all. When you get a chance look around that garage you have been meaning to clean out and see if you have any items that may be useful.
I would love a couple of things for hands on training.
A dragster cage. I dont want a full chasis, just looking for the driver area to practive driver removal. It does not need to be straight or usable as a race car.
a paddle tire - certainly nothing that can be saved and used again - just to show folks what they are.
blown burst plates - preferrably folded back but with all metal attached
a broken pulley -
a completely blown head gasket -
a broken belt and an intact one certainly not soemthing you will still use - I am sure I can get a broken one at the next event....Heck if I would have thought about it, I think one team would have supplied me with 3 at the first Soboba race this year.
possibly a old nitrous bottle that is no longer used
Any obvious blown apart motor areas such as heads, blocks, pans or intakes.
I am working with some other groups to get a helmet and neck collar as well as trying to get some other head and neck restraint devices such as Hans and R3 however if you have extra that are of no use, please let me know.
I also will be visiting a few pits in September for some detailed photos of motors. I want to show folks burst plates, and blowers that are the common problems we see at the tracks. I think getting a whole motor would be a bit much, plus it may make me want a race car....
Ok thanks in advance all. I appreciate anything you may have. I know they are strange requests but I have found hands on visual aids make training far more useful. We are at all NSDA events at the finish line so come visit and bring your junk!
Thanks
Dave

| Great idea Dave. I work on the National Ski Patrol here in Maine and have also provided first aid coverage at a number of Rock Maple Racing Snowcross events. It is amazing what the human body will tolerate for abuse! Our racing assoc. does quit a few shows at venues that have never seen our sport before and are therefore unfamiliar with our equipment and how we do things. I always make a point of rounding up the safety workers before the event starts and going over several of the faster vehicles with them and explaining all of the safety gear and how it functions. Of course we don't have anywhere near the calibur of vehicles you get to deal with. Keep posting your requests and let us know how things works out. |
